Scans in your maternity hospital
In Ireland, the public health system typically offers two routine pregnancy scans.
While scanner availability may vary between hospitals, most expectant mothers are offered a scan around 12 weeks and another at approximately 20 weeks.
The first scan, often called the early pregnancy scan or dating scan, is performed around 12 weeks. Its main purposes are to:
- Confirm that the pregnancy is viable and that your baby is developing healthily.
- Check for multiple pregnancies (such as twins).
- Confirm the pregnancy is located within the uterus.
- Calculate the gestational age of your baby based on the date of your last menstrual period.
- Estimate the expected date of birth.
The second scan, usually carried out between 18 and 22 weeks, is known as the fetal anatomy scan.
This detailed examination checks how your baby’s body is developing and looks for potential abnormalities.
It assesses the formation of key organs, limbs, spine, heart, and brain, helping to identify any concerns as early as possible.
In summary, the two most common pregnancy scans offered in Ireland are:
- Dating Scan (before 15 weeks): Confirms the pregnancy details, baby’s size, and estimated due date.
- Fetal Anatomy Scan (18–22 weeks): Examines your baby’s development in detail and screens for possible birth defects.
Extra scans during pregnancy
Private ultrasound scans
You may choose to pay for extra scans during your pregnancy.
You may do this because you want:
- to have your scan earlier in your pregnancy
- more reassurance – for example, if you had a previous pregnancy loss
- to find out the sex of your baby
- a 3D or a 4D scan – these may give a better view and show your baby’s face in more detail
- more photos of your baby or a video recording
There are no known risks to you or your baby from having extra scans.
