With nicer weather on the horizon, it’s a great time to think of fun new ways to get the family out and about to enjoy the amazing experiences Ireland has to offer. We can be quick to dismiss ideas of bringing babies and toddlers to new places for fear of their often wild behaviour, plus, they won’t remember it anyway, right? Not exactly. Bringing babies and toddlers to interesting places can spark a lifetime of curiosity and adventure.
The new sights and experiences are also a great way to unleash some of your toddler’s seemingly-endless energy. All the new information will hopefully equal a great night’s sleep as your little one’s brain processes everything they have encountered in their interesting day.
On board? Let’s go!
The Beach
Most of us remember the excitement of days at the beach as a child. Load up the car with the essentials including plenty of sun protection and head off for the day. A tent with UV protection may be especially useful for a day at the beach with a baby to keep their extra sensitive skin out of the sun’s harsh rays. Dublin’s sandy beaches include: Burrow beach, Portrane beach, Seapoint beach, Portmarnock, Sandycove and more.
Kildare Farm Foods Open Farm & Shop
Located in Rathmuck, Co. Kildare, this is a third-generation family farm which is totally accessible for buggies and wheelchairs. The farm has a teddy bear factory, crazy golf, a train ride and lots of animals to see including alpacas, ostriches, wallabies and camels. They also have a cafe with lots of kid-friendly options. Entry to the farm is free and no booking is required!
Fairy Trails
Add some enchantment to a simple walk in the park by visiting a Fairy Trail near you. Make sure your little one keeps their eyes peeled for fairy sightings. Some Fairy Trails also have a special spot where children can give their soothers to the fairies – a great feature if you’re trying to ditch the dummy!
Soft Play
Just because it’s summer doesn’t mean there’ll be sun! On rainy days, soft play centres are a go-to for so many parents. With so many centres to choose from in and around Dublin, the kids are sure to have an exciting adventure each time. Most soft play centres have dedicated sections for smaller children and babies so your littlest ones can play in confidence.
The Zoo
Attracting over 1 million visitors per year, Dublin Zoo is arguably Dublin’s biggest attraction. Its 28 hectares has something for everyone with regular activities and events. Even the smallest family members will enjoy marvelling at the exotic animals.
Sealife Bray
Located on the beautiful beachfront in Bray, Co. Wicklow, Sealife is your ultimate underwater zoo. See amazing sea creatures including sharks, octopus and seahorses – perfect for your budding marine biologists. You can even meet Peppa Pig at certain times throughout the day, prepare for starstruck toddlers!
Toddler Mornings at Leisureplex
Under 3s can enjoy a full roam of your local Leisureplex’s Zoo Playland Monday to Friday 10 am to 12 pm. This is a great opportunity for little ones to play together at their own pace without the bigger kids around. It’s also a great place for parents to meet and chat, with free tea and coffee included in the €6 fee.
Your local library
Keep an eye on events held at your local library. There are often fun activities for all ages including baby sensory, toddler playgroups and music classes. Reading different books will also spark a lifelong love of reading for your little one and boost their speech and language skills.
